Extracting a video's audio as MP3

The usual route is to find a converter site, upload the file and wait. There is a shorter and considerably more private path: do it in the browser itself, while the video is on screen.

The conversion runs on your machine

YDownloadNow ships ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so extraction and MP3 encoding happen inside your browser. The video is not uploaded to any server, it does not sit in a queue, and no copy is left on anyone else's disk.

That is the practical difference from a converter site: no size limit imposed by the service, no waiting behind other users, and the material never leaves your computer.

It works on the video you are watching

There is no need to download the video first and convert it afterwards. When the extension detects a video on the page — a direct MP4, an HLS stream or a DASH one — a button appears to save the audio only, and it does the whole journey in one go.

It also works if the video was detected some other way: the MP3 button sits next to the normal download button on the same card.

About quality

The MP3 is generated from the original audio track with no intermediate steps. Bear in mind that no conversion improves the source: if the video carries audio compressed at 128 kbps, the resulting MP3 holds no more information, whatever the file says.

To keep the original audio untouched without re-encoding, downloading the full video and keeping it is often the better option.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file never leaves your machine.

Is there a length or size limit?

We impose none. The practical limit is your machine's memory, and on long videos the download is written straight to disk to avoid it.

Can I choose the MP3 quality?

Audio is encoded at a high quality by default. Remember the result can never exceed the video's original audio.

Is it legal?

It depends on the content and what you use it for. Extracting audio from your own material, or from material licensed to allow it, is fine; doing so with protected work without permission is not. Responsibility lies with whoever downloads.
