Downloading a .mpd (DASH) video

DASH is the other major streaming format alongside HLS, and it has a quirk that catches almost everyone out: video and audio are two separate downloads. That is why so many people end up with a file that looks perfect and has no sound.

What the .mpd is

The .mpd (Media Presentation Description) is an XML file describing everything the video is made of: the available picture representations with their bandwidth, the audio tracks, the languages, and how each one's segments are named.

Unlike HLS, here the player combines two independent streams in real time. No single file containing both ever exists until someone joins them.

Why you end up with a silent video

If you follow the manifest's addresses and fetch the picture track, you get exactly that: picture. The audio sits in another branch of the XML with its own segments, and it has to be downloaded separately and muxed with the video to produce a normal MP4.

A second detail breaks manual downloads: the two tracks need not have the same number of segments. Estimating the count from the duration leads to requesting pieces that do not exist, and to a cascade of 404s right at the end.

How the extension does it

YDownloadNow parses the .mpd — including the different segmentation modes: SegmentTemplate, SegmentTimeline, SegmentList and SegmentBase — and offers the picture qualities by bandwidth. It downloads the chosen track and the audio and muxes them with ffmpeg on your machine, without re-encoding: no quality lost and no long wait.

The end of a track is genuinely detected rather than estimated, so a 404 on the last segment does not ruin the download.

Step by step

  1. Install the extensionChrome, Edge or Firefox.
  2. Play the videoThe extension detects the .mpd as soon as the player requests it.
  3. Choose the picture qualityRepresentations are listed by bandwidth, each with its estimated size.
  4. DownloadPicture and audio are fetched and joined into an MP4 without re-encoding, both tracks in sync.

Frequently asked questions

I downloaded the .mpd and it will not play

It is an XML description file, not the video. It holds the addresses of the picture and audio segments, which must be downloaded and joined.

Why did my manual download have no sound?

Because in DASH the audio is an independent track. Following only the video branch gives you picture without audio; both have to be downloaded and muxed.

Is quality lost when the tracks are joined?

No. The join copies the streams as they are, without re-encoding, so quality is identical to the original.

Does it work with paid platforms?

If it carries DRM, no: the manifest declares the encryption and the extension marks it as not downloadable. Downloading protected content is not possible without bypassing DRM, and we do not do that.
