Video downloader extension for Vivaldi

Vivaldi gives you more control over the browser than almost anything else, and then a video plays and the download panel stays empty. It is not a bug in Vivaldi: what is playing never arrived as a file.

Why the download panel stays empty

Vivaldi lists what it downloads. A streamed video is never downloaded in that sense: the player asks for a playlist — HLS (.m3u8) or DASH (.mpd) — and then pulls hundreds of segments that it plays and discards. Nothing lands in the panel because nothing was ever saved.

The extension picks up that playlist, downloads the segments and joins them into a normal MP4 without re-encoding — same quality, no conversion wait — and the finished file does show up where you expect it.

Installing it in Vivaldi

Vivaldi is built on Chromium and installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store, so it is one click from the same listing Chrome uses. Once installed you can move, hide or pin the button like any other in Vivaldi's toolbar.

It does not clash with Vivaldi's own blocker

Vivaldi ships its own ad and tracker blocking. The extension works at a different level — it watches what the player actually requests — so the two coexist and you do not have to disable either.

A minimum-size filter also keeps ad clips and thumbnails out of the results, so the list shows the video you came for.

Everything the Chrome build does

Being Chromium, Vivaldi gets the complete build: a folder per file type, writing straight to disk as the download runs — which is what lets multi-gigabyte videos through without exhausting memory — plus its own window so a long download survives you moving around the browser.

Beyond video it takes MP3 audio from the stream, images, PDFs and documents and archives from the page, and can trim a section before downloading rather than fetching the lot.

Frequently asked questions

Vivaldi will not download a video — is something broken?

No. If the video plays as a stream there is no file to save, so nothing reaches the download panel. The extension rebuilds the file from the stream segments, and then it downloads normally.

Do I need a Vivaldi-specific version?

No. Vivaldi installs from the Chrome Web Store, so the Chrome listing is the one to use and it behaves identically.

Does it interfere with Vivaldi’s ad blocker?

No. They work at different levels: Vivaldi filters what loads, the extension reads what the player requests. Both can stay on.

Can it save an .m3u8 or .mpd stream?

Yes, that is the core case. It reads the playlist, fetches the segments and produces a normal MP4 without re-encoding.

Does it work on DRM sites?

No. DRM-protected services cannot be downloaded; the extension flags them instead of producing an unplayable file.
