Trimming a video before downloading

If you only want ten minutes of a two-hour talk, the usual route is to download all of it and cut it afterwards in an editor. That is two waits and a huge file you end up deleting. It can be done the other way round: choose the section first and download only that.

It fetches only what you asked for

A streamed video is split into segments, each covering a known time range. Once you set a start and an end, the extension requests only the segments inside that window and skips the rest.

The difference is not cosmetic: ten minutes of a two-hour talk is roughly 8% of the data. It downloads in a fraction of the time, takes a fraction of the disk, and — on the free plan — costs the same single download as the whole video.

No re-encoding, and what that means

The fragment is joined as-is, without re-encoding: no quality loss and none of the long wait a conversion would take.

The trade-off, stated up front: the cut lands on a segment boundary, not on an exact frame. Depending on the video that is a few seconds of slack at each end. For keeping a scene, a song or a stretch of a lecture it is plenty; if you need frame accuracy, an editor afterwards is still required.

Where it applies

It works on streamed video (HLS and DASH), which is what comes in segments and where long videos live anyway. A direct MP4 is a single file with no segments, so there is nothing to select.

Step by step

  1. Open the video and let it be detectedIt has to be a stream (HLS or DASH) for trimming to apply.
  2. Open the trim row on the video cardYou will see two fields: start and end.
  3. Type the range you wantIn minutes and seconds. Leave the end empty to run to the finish.
  4. Apply and downloadOnly the segments in that range are requested.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cut accurate to the second?

Not to the frame: it lands on the stream segment boundary, usually a few seconds. In exchange nothing is re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and no conversion wait.

Does it download the whole video and then cut it?

No. Only the segments in the chosen range are requested, so you save time and data as well as space.

Does it work with any video?

With streamed ones (HLS and DASH). A direct MP4 is a single file with no segments and does not support this kind of trimming.

Does a fragment use less quota?

No: the quota counts downloads, not minutes. A fragment costs the same as a full video.
