Why right-click does not work on Instagram
Instagram does not link the video as a file: it delivers it through a blob URL created in the browser and, often, in segments. That is why there is no "save video as", and why link-pasting sites fail so often with recent content or with private accounts you can legitimately see.
The extension works from inside the page: it sees what the player genuinely requests and rebuilds the file as-is, without re-encoding. The quality is the original, not a recompression.

It behaves the same across all three: a reel, a story before it expires, or the video in an ordinary post. It also grabs the images in a carousel, which helps when a post mixes photos and video.
A minimum-size filter keeps thumbnails and avatars out, so the list shows what you came for rather than thirty interface icons.
When the quality is not what you expected
Instagram recompresses uploads fairly hard, reels especially. The extension saves what Instagram serves, which is the best available: if the original went up in 4K and the platform kept it at 1080, the file comes out at 1080. No tool can recover what is no longer there — be wary of any that promises it.
Posts with several pieces
A carousel can mix several videos and photos. The extension lists them separately, with their sizes, so you pick what you take instead of grabbing the whole block. That is the practical difference against pasting the link into a site, which usually returns only the first item.
